Our 2-hour inshore trip is all about keeping it simple and fun. We'll meet you right on Old Orchard Beach, get everyone set up with rods and tackle, and hit the surf. This isn't deep-sea fishing – we're staying close to shore where the action is fast and the fish are plentiful. It's perfect if you're new to fishing or want to introduce the kids without committing to a full day. We can take up to 4 people, so bring the whole family or a few friends. The beach scenery is stunning, and there's nothing like the sound of the surf while you're waiting for that next bite.
We keep the gear light and easy to handle on this trip. You'll be using spinning rods paired with hand-tied jigs and artificial lures. These are perfect for targeting the mackerel and other inshore species that cruise these waters. I'll show you how to cast, retrieve, and set the hook when you feel that telltale tug. We might switch up techniques depending on what's biting – maybe some bottom fishing or even tossing some topwater lures if the fish are surfacing. It's all about adapting to what the fish want that day, and I'll make sure you're in on the action.
Atlantic Mackerel are the stars of the show on our inshore trips. These streamlined speedsters hunt in schools, so when you find them, the action can be non-stop. Mackerel typically range from 1-2 pounds, but what they lack in size they make up for in fight. They're known for their powerful runs and acrobatic leaps when hooked. Plus, they're beautiful fish with their tiger-striped backs and silvery sides. Late spring through early fall is prime time for mackerel, with peak action often in July and August. Aside from being fun to catch, mackerel make excellent eating if you want to take a few home for the grill.
Our trips out of Old Orchard Beach are all about accessibility and quick action. We'll be fishing right from the beach or just beyond the breakers, so no worries about seasickness or long boat rides. The water here is typically calm, making it great for all ages and experience levels. You might see seals popping up to check us out, or seabirds diving for bait fish. It's a lively ecosystem, and you're right in the middle of it. I'll be there to help with everything from baiting hooks to landing fish, so you can focus on the fun part – reeling them in!

Atlantic mackerel are a summer staple here in Maine. These sleek, blue-green fish with wavy stripes typically run 10-14 inches long. We find them in big schools near the surface, often right off the beach. They're fast swimmers and aggressive feeders, which makes for exciting light tackle action. Mackerel put up a scrappy fight on light gear, and they're excellent eating too - packed with healthy omega-3s. Kids especially love catching these sporty little fish. We usually target them from May through September when the water warms up and they move inshore. To catch mackerel, I like using small shiny lures or jigs that mimic their natural prey. A fast retrieve often triggers strikes. Keep an eye out for diving birds, as they'll lead you right to the schools. Once you find them, it's not uncommon to catch fish after fish. Just watch out for seals and bigger predators that like to crash the party!
