Indian River Lagoon Updates for Redfish, Snook, and Tarpon
Indian River - Brevard, FL
As we move into June, the waters around Melbourne and the Indian River Lagoon are warming up, creating highly productive conditions for inshore anglers. The key to a successful outing right now is capitalizing on the early morning bite before the midday heat sets in and the water temperatures peak.
Here is a breakdown of what we are currently seeing on the water:
Redfish: We are finding consistent numbers of Redfish patrolling the shallow flats and mangrove shorelines. First thing in the morning, topwater lures are generating aggressive strikes. As the sun rises, switching to live pilchards or cut bait cast deep into the mangrove shadows is the most effective strategy.
Snook: The Snook bite remains very strong, particularly around the inlets, bridges, and deep-water docks during moving tides. Live bait is currently outperforming artificials, but skilled fly anglers are still seeing success using hand-tied baitfish patterns presented precisely along current seams.
Tarpon: We are starting to see more Tarpon rolling in the lagoon and along the nearshore waters. These fish are highly responsive to well-placed live mullet or crabs. If you are targeting them on fly, bring a heavy-weight setup and be prepared for a technical presentation.
Sea Trout: Early mornings over the grass flats are yielding good numbers of Speckled Sea Trout. Soft plastic paddle tails and light-tackle setups are working perfectly for steady catches before the sun gets too high.
Captain's Tip for June: Water clarity in the lagoon has been variable depending on recent afternoon rain showers. When navigating the sight-fishing flats, keep your polarized sunglasses clean and slow your poling speed to spot fish before they notice your profile.
Whether you prefer light tackle casting or technical fly fishing, the Space Coast is offering plenty of opportunities this month. Ensure your gear is prepped for warmer water behavior, and always prioritize an early launch.
